Incidence of type 2 diabetes in individuals with central obesity in a rural Japanese population: The Tanno and Sobetsu study.

چکیده
A ccording to the new International Diabetes Federation (IDF) definition of metabolic syndrome, for a person to be defined as having metabolic syndrome they must have central obesity defined by waist circumference (1). In the definition, there are some ethnic or country-specific differences in the cutoff points of waist circumference, and Japanese cutoff points have been separately established in the IDF definition ( 85 cm for men and 90 cm for women). The Japanese Society of Internal Medicine and eight related scientific societies have also jointly announced new Japanese criteria of metabolic syndrome using the same cutoff points of waist circumference (2). However, the impact of central obesity using the cutoff points as a risk of type 2 diabetes is not known. In this study, we investigated the incidence of type 2 diabetes in citizens of two rural communities in Japan to determine the relationship between type 2 diabetes and central obesity, and we also investigated the independent effects of central obesity compared with those of overall obesity.

متن کاملIs household food insecurity a determinant of weight status in patients with type 2 diabetes in rural areas?
Background: There is mixed evidence about food insecurity and overweight/obesity coexisting, however it is unclear about association between food insecurity and weight status in people with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between food insecurity and weight status in individuals with type 2 diabetes in rural areas in Iran. Methods:...
متن کاملClinical diagnosis of metabolic syndrome 1. Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia are seen not only in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) but also in essential hypertension (EHT), dyslipidemia and obesity; these are known as the components of metabolic syndrome. To evaluate the significance of insulin resistance, we examined the relations between insulin resistance and accumulation of components of metabolic syndrome in residen...

BACKGROUND We investigated the effect of longitudinal status change in metabolic syndrome (MetS) assessed by two different criteria on new onset of type 2 diabetes (NODM) in a Japanese population. METHODS The participants were 827 non-diabetic citizens who had undergone medical examinations in 1994 and 2003 or 2004. We used two different criteria of MetS: the interim criteria by 6 institution...

levels in the target range, the rather complex dynamic scale protocol (as used in London, U.K.) tended to be inferior when compared with the MPC algorithm; this supports our views that tight glucose control in the ICU is not exclusively dependent on the protocol but also on clinical features such as different methods of nutritional provision and intuitive decision making of the ICU staff. A cle...
